The CD maturity value formula
A certificate of deposit uses compound interest calculated over the full term. The maturity value depends on the principal, APR, compounding frequency, and term length.

Understanding the inputs
Deposit amount: The lump sum you are placing in the certificate of deposit. This is your starting principal and remains locked in until maturity (unless you accept an early withdrawal penalty).
Annual interest rate (APR): The nominal annual rate stated by the bank. This is different from APY — your bank is required by federal regulation to disclose both. Use the APR here; the calculator will compute the APY for you.
CD term: The length of time until the CD matures, entered in months. Common terms include 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 60 months.
Compounding frequency: How often interest is added to your balance within a given year. Options are daily, monthly, quarterly, or annually. More frequent compounding produces a marginally higher effective yield for the same stated rate.
How CDs work
A certificate of deposit is a time deposit offered by banks and credit unions in which you agree to leave a fixed amount of money on deposit for a specified term in exchange for a guaranteed interest rate. CDs are insured by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) for up to $250,000 per depositor per institution, making them one of the safest savings vehicles available.
The compounding formula
The maturity value of a CD is calculated using the standard compound interest formula:
Maturity Value = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t)
Where P is principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is compounding periods per year, and t is term in years.
For a $10,000 deposit at 5% APR for 12 months with monthly compounding:
- r = 0.05, n = 12, t = 1
- Monthly rate: 0.05 / 12 = 0.004167
- Maturity value: $10,000 × (1.004167)^12 = $10,511.62
- Interest earned: $511.62 (vs. $500.00 with simple/annual interest)
- APY: (1 + 0.05/12)^12 − 1 = 5.116%
The difference between APR and APY is small at modest rates but becomes more meaningful at higher rates or with longer terms.
APY: what you actually earn
APY (Annual Percentage Yield) is the true annual return accounting for compounding. Under the federal Truth in Savings Act, banks must advertise CDs using APY rather than APR to ensure consumers can make apples-to-apples comparisons. If a bank advertises “5.00% APY,” that is the effective annual yield — the APR would be slightly lower.
When comparing CDs from different banks, always compare APYs for the same term. A CD with a slightly lower APR but daily compounding can have a higher APY than one with a higher APR but annual compounding.
Building a CD ladder
One popular strategy for CD savers is the CD ladder — dividing a lump sum across multiple CDs with staggered maturities, such as 3-month, 6-month, 12-month, and 24-month CDs. As each CD matures, you reinvest it in the longest rung of the ladder. Benefits include:
